David was one of over seven hundred eager contestants who put in his answer, and as fate would have it, his name was the lucky entry pulled out of the finalists, he guessed correctly by naming the three photos as a trumpeter from the Grenadiers a Cheval, a Cuirassieur, and finally a general dressed in the uniform of the 4TH Hussar's. His prize is a spetacular book called "The Napoleonic Soldier" by Stephen Maughan from the " www.napoleonic-archive.com " fame. Steve was gracecous enough to donate his book so I could give it away to some lucky fella/gal. I can't say enough about the generous nature of this gentleman, he's also informed me of some more books he's going to donate so I can put some more free give-aways on my blog. His partner on the base is from "FN67 Cuirassieurs on Standing Horses in Reserve, at Ease", here is shown leaning on his saddle watching the battle unfold before him.
These two guys are the officer and trumpeter of the regiment from "FN66 Cuirassieurs Command on Standing Horses in Reserve,at Ease". The trumpeter is shown gving orders to the NCO, pointing to where he's supposed to take his reconnasince group, or as I like to see it. The officer is just eyeing the field planning his charge accordingly.
The cuirassieur fixing his helmet is from "FN68 Cuirassieurs on Standing Horses in Reserve,at Ease/2". I've also include a general de division standing at the end of the line, which is from "FN52 Staff and Generals Dismounted."
These two are the regiment's 1st battalion's officer and standard bearer, as you can see I've painted them as the "1st Regiment of the Young Guard's- 1st Voltigeurs".
Here we have a drummer sitting on his drum tapping away a tune along with his fellow musician, a fifer who has his musket sitting across his lap, the musket comes seperate but I've decided to put it on his lap to change the monatanay of having every soldier with their musket simple beside them.
These are the last two gents at the end of my line up. I hope you keep on checking out my blog and matbe tell some of your friends, well enough of the shameless plugging, time to announce the winner. The winner is John Leahy from Ohio, congratulations. His e-mail was very warming to know how their are people out there that still and try to teach the children about the wonderful things in life that are out there for them and not simply giving then a video game to get them out of their hair. A very heartwarming e-mail. Just to let you know, there was a very honourable mention e-mail, a gentleman named Mark who is an avid Napoleonic Nut just like myself, it was very difficult not to give him the prize, the only deciding factor being of the slightest of margins, excellent work Mark and keep up the good work. Well once again thanks to everyone for entering and visiting my blog and an especial thank you to Stephen Maughan of Napoleonic Archive fame for giving me the permission so I could use his name and product for my contest, and for all you out there if you are undecided on whether to buy some of his products, don't hesitate they are all worth it, you won't be dissappointed, so a hardy good buy for now and have a Merry Christmas, Mark.

A Free Give Away

Today I'm going to give away a free copy of "The Battle For Papelotte" . All you have to do is e-mail me back telling me why and how much of a Napoleonic Nut you are and why you deserve it. I'm going to make my decision 24 hours from this post. The reason I'm going to give this copy of "The Battle For Papelotte" is simple. First off I'm going to give you a little backgroung info., the owner and publisher of this title is Stephen Maughan. He owns and operates two web-sites called "Waterloo-Wargames" and "The Napoleonic-Archive" , he sells four different scenario booklets from the battle of Waterloo. I recently ordered two of these booklets "The Battle for Papelotte & The Battle for Plancenoit", unfortuneatly they sent me two copies of "The Battle for Papelotte", I e-mailed Stephen backed and explained to him about the mix-up and gracesly he sent me the other copy and told me I could give the other copy away to a friend of mine. Well, I thought that there is someone out there that would like to have a free copy of this booklet, since there is no one that plays Napoleonics around in my area I thought I would be like Stephen and spread the good cheer and generosity displayed by Stephen and give my second copy away for free. So all you have to do is e-mail me back, and the deserving person will get one free copy of "The Battle for Papelotte". The next two photos below are close-ups of the miniatures used and displayed in the booklets, I can't say enough about the quality and care taken in the production of these scenario booklets, so even if you don't get the free copy look Stephen up and get your own, trust me you won't be dissapointed. Thanks and have fun gaming.

some based cuirassiers

A quick post of some based and one partially based stand. The finished based stand is a couple of cuirassiers charging, they are going to belong in the front row of my regiment, apart of the front line. The next two photos below show a different view of the same photo and also the partially based stand which has one figure, a casualty. I'm not quite sure where he's going to be in the grand scheme theme of things but I'm sure I'll fit him in somewhere. The two guys charging belong to FN60 Cuirassiers Charging and the casualty is apart of FN70 Cuirassier Hit by Canister/Volley. For any of you out there that have recently moved you all know that it takes alot of your time in setteling down and getting everything back to the way your used to or the way you would like it to be. To make up for it I'm going to post a couple of posts all at once, and once again sorry for the delay. Anyway here are a couple of pics of the new Perry-Miniatures Light Infantry line.
This is a pic of a light infantry sapper from the perry miniature range FN71 Light Infantry Regimental Command.
These next two pics are a combination of an officer from FN72Light Infantry Battalion Command and a chasseur from FN73 Light Infantry Chasseur March Attack.
All these miniatures aren't based yet but I thought I would give you a taste of what's to come, I also decided to throw in a little scenery in the background, a little bit of advise given to me from you fellow forum friends. This first pic. is a picture of my display cabinet, to get a better look at the figures click on the pic. to get a closer look. This level has the 5th Lancers from Reille's 2nd corp at Waterloo, just one more guy to finish and the regiments done. The cuirassiers are the 7th from Milhaud's 4th Cavalry corp.. Finally two cannons from my soon to be Grande Battery, I have five more cannon's to go and she'll be done, I hope, you know how grandiose us Napoleonic wargamers can get, there's never enough.
This guy in sky blue is from the Perry's 1815 French range and can be found in FN54- Mounted Imperial Orderlies. This is foundry's limited edition figure " Napoleon Crossing The Alps" sculpted by Alan Perry. For those of you out there wondering why it's a limited edition figure, foundry had a promotion some years ago and to this day still do the same thing were if you buy so much or if you buy a certain type of figures you would get a limited edition figure. Well ever since I was this figure I fell in love with it, it has taken me quite some time in trying to locate one of these, for one they are not out there in a lot of quantity, plus the fact that whoever got them used and painted them up for themselves, made this very hard for me to get one. Not to mention when I did find one for sale it was always very costly since they are in such high demand by the Napoleonic wargaming community. So you would be surprised when I found one on sale on E-Bay for a mere $20.00 U.S. (Buy it now option). Needless to say I scooped it up right away.
Here is a bit pf a close-up of him, the most troubling part for me in painting this miniature was his horse, I always have trouble in painting white horses, nevermind trying to blend in some grey with the white, I only hope I did this great sculpt justice with my poor painting skills.
Finally a shot of the rear of the figure, his cloak took some tinkering with, I finally decided on orange as a highlight, I think it came out quite nicely, red is so hard to highlight because no matter how lite the red is it always tends to blend in with the base coat, just one of the pitfalls in working with red well maybe just for me, anyway thanks for viewing and I hope you've received some inspiration or viewing pleasure for the Napoleonic era.

artillery part 2

This is the 2nd and finished part of my artillery post. Over the next couple of pics I will show you the finished product as well as part of my Grande Battery Project. This first pic is a shot of the finished product, the perry-bros., FN18 Foot Artillery loading 6 pounder. I added a couple of scenic touches like a little shrub, some broken tree branches and a rock, just for purely asthetic reasons.
Here is a close-up shot of one of the gunners, he's holding the lint-stock ready to fire the cannon.
Finally here is a group shot of both FN17 and FN18 together side by side as part of my Grande Battery Project. There is going to be at least two more cannons added to make this into my official Grande Battery that I will use in my wargaming, and that's going to be at least four cannon I should say because I haven't quite made up my mind yet, whether to put four or add some more, I think it's going to be one of those continual work in progress's.
Here is a figure that I also finished since my last post, it's a Chasseur a Cheval officer from the perry-bros. FN38 1st Chasseur a Cheval Command Galloping.
Also this is another figure I finished, part of the FN50 Napoleon's Personal Staff set, it's one his personal valet's holding his horse or should I say Napoleon's Piqueur - "Outriders" these were men responsible for the care of his horses, carriages, and so forth, in short everything to do with his Grand Equerry which was everything to do with the imperial stables, grooms, couriers, and pages. Thanks again for watching and I hope you enjoyed it, there is going to be another post following this one and that's because I can only fit five pics per post, so once again thank you.

artillery

This is another quick post of a work in progress, here's part of my soon to be grande battery. ADC's were not only messangers for the generals but they were also expected to take over for any general injured or killed in battle. Most ADC's in the french army were accomplished generals themselves , unlike other ADC's in opposing armies who were put in that position by calling in favours or being very wealthy since it was considered a cushy job for the rich and well connected, Gentleman in their language.
I made him an ADC to Marshall and you can tell that by the white armband around his arm of course. The other two colours for ADC's are red and blue, the red is a ADC for a general de division, and the blue is for a general de brigade.

scouting

Here are a couple of figures I finished over the last couple of days. The first were already finished but I based them. The second miniature is a Red Lancer officer.

This scenic base is supposed to show an assistant adjutant commander scouting the terrain and opposing troop dispostions for the senoir commanders back at H.Q., and just for his safety he has a lolley o'single voltigeur for his protection, who is keeping watch for the both of them because he knows if they get in a jam with the enemy he won't be able to count on the prissy asst. adjutant for help, because he is an officer and he can't get his fingernails dirty. Just kidding, I'd thought I'd throw a little humour in the explanation, on a more serious note, the voltigeur is from Foundry from the Young Guard pack. The asst. adjutant is from the Perry range FN55 Mounted and Dismounted Staff Officers.
This guy is a Red Lancer officer just hanging around as in the Perry range title of this pack, FN53 Hangers On High Ranking Officers of various regiments.
A little close-up for your viewing pleasure. I chose this particular figure because it depicts the skirmashier kneeling down loading his musket, and I thought he would look nice placed under the arch or in the window of the house.
Here the voltigeur is placed under the arch of the porch getting ready for another target by reloading his musket. If you look closer off to your left you can see that the door is slightly ajar, in the box set of the Italeri no.6075 model kit " Country house with porch" the diagram on the back of the box shows the doors of the house shut, by I thought it would give the house a nice scenic feel to it if the door was slightly ajar so I fidgeted alittle bit with the door frame and glued it in slightly open.
Here is a close-up view of the two compared to each other. If you really look closely you'll notice that the scale of the figure is slightly larger than the scale of the house but the difference is very minute.
Finally here is a picture of the voltigeur in the window preparing to shoot out at someone, maybe a prussian trying to take hold of Placenoit, dare to dream to make a scenic depiction of the battle of Waterloo. Also if you look closely at the wall by the shutters you'll notice little bullet holes on the side of the building, a nice touch I think and another example of Italeri's attention to detail as I mentioned before. They also put little patches of plaster whitewashed that hasn't peeled off of the house, I think that this is a shining example of how you can mix and match different scales and companies to make a beautiful display scene, you just have to use a little imagination. I took a break from painting miniatures and decided to paint some scenery. This house that I painted is from Italeri an italian company that makes 1:72 and 1:35 plastic models. This particular house is a 1:72 which measures up to a 20mm scale, not quite as big as my 28mm miniatures but it still looks great with the figures, you can tell the difference in scale if you really look at hard enough but if you do then i think you're just being a little picky in my opion. I decided to paint the house in a dark grey brick coulor and then just simply dry brushed a liter grey over the bricks which turned out quite nicely if i don't say so myself. The roof was painted in a red brick shade and them highlighted by dry brushing lite pink over the raised edges.
The house is named "Country house with porch" no.6075 model kit. As i said before it's a 1:72 scale and made by Italeri, in which I think makes the best 1:72 scale plastics around. There figures are always nice and crisp with alot of attention to detail, and if you've bought any of these 1:72 figure kits you'll know what I mean when I say they come out nicely when painted with their attention to detail and their crisp and clean plastic sharpness. Unlike some other companies who's kits seem alittle blocky and not quite as sharp when it comes to the corners and edges of the figure, the detail seems to be lacking for some reason.
Anyway in my next post I'll show a figure and how a 28mm miniature compares to a 1:72(20mm) scale miniature or kit.

Charge!

Just a quick update of some miniatures that I finished this weed-end. The first is a couple of shots of a cuirassier charging, he can be found at the perry's site under FN60 Cuirassiers Charging. The second figure is of General Lobeau who commanded the sixth corps against the prussians at placenoit, and he can also be found at the perry's site under FN2 Mounted Corp Commanders. Anyway it's off to work I go, just thought you would like a quick peek at some finished miniatures.

what time is it?

Here are a couple of figures I finished over the week-end, the first is an officer from the perry-miniature's line. The second miniature is also from the perry-mininatures, except this is from the casulaties range. Take a look at the multiple shots of the officer and some shots of the casualty with the rest of his fellow soldiers.
The jacket shown here might look good in my humble opnion, but don't let that fool you, this was the hardest part of the figure to do. The trick is to highlight the raised folds without adding to much, because too much makes the jacket look silly.
Here is the final shot, the rear view of him. I painted him as an officer of a light infantry regiment, I think he's supposed to be a high ranking officer since he is apart of the -FN53 "Hangers On" high ranking officers of various regiments dismounted- Perry-Miniatures Range. I tried to paint him as a Young Guard officer, I'm not quite sure if I got all the details wright, if you happen to see anything out of place or just plain wrong about the facing etc., just post a comment, I'd be eternal grateful. You can't see from this view but he's looking at his pocket watch, I like this pose and just hope I did it justice.
In the next couple of pics I have the finished figure, the one on the left of the first row, the fusilier with his hand over his eyes leaning backwards like he's getting shot and thrown backwards.
This is a close-up shot. In this base I put him as part of the 1st company of fusiliers as apart of the 72nd regiment in Bachelu's division of Reille's 2nd corp. The first three figures are all getting shot at as from the perry-miniature's range FN16 Line Infantry Casulties. I thought this would be a nice change in my regiment, with most painters they tend to put all their figures in a group, bunching them up together and while this does look good, I like mixing it up alittle, it tends to make them look more scenic. I hope you enjoyed this post, and so bye for now and thanks for viewing.

voltigeurs

Here's a quick post of two miniatures, one I just finished painted and the other is an older miniature I painted three years ago, one of the very first miniatures I painted when I first got into Napoleonic gaming. The first figure is going to be the french officer leading the voltigeur company of my 72nd regiment. He is apart of the 1815 French range from the perry brothers, the code for this particular officer is FN22 Line Officers Advancing.
This happy go lucky fella is an officer from the 2nd Hussar Regiment, and as I said before he is one of the very first figures I ever painted. He doesn't take part in the 1815 Waterloo affair but when I first got into Napoleonics I wasn't very organized so I didn't know which era and which army I wanted to paint, so I started to painted a little bit of everything-French,British,Prussians and Bavarians. The reason I painted him as part of the 2nd Hussar regiment is because one of the first pictures I saw of an hussar was one from the 2nd hussar regiment thus the choice of colours.
This particular gentleman and I use the term lightly, because all us napoleonic buffs know that the hussar's had a reputation as fierce warriors and soldiers and even fiercer at being gentleman. They were famous for being wildly barbaric drunkards and doing and taking anything they wanted, especially wine and women. Thus the romantic idea of the Dual was invented, propelled and made to look as a way of keeping your honour. No other particular army group fought more duals than the hussar regiments, and no other army group embodied all the good and bad qualities of a soldier as the hussar, Napoleon's finest, and just to give you an example we do not have to look further than the self imposed leader of the hussar's, Lasalle himself, enough said. This particular gentleman can be found at the Wargamesfoundry website under the Napoleonic section under the code FN229 Hussar Centre Company Full Dress Command. Once again thanks for looking and reading the rambling-ons of a fellow Napoleonic enthusiast.

Big Brothers

"Les Gros Frere" The Big Brothers, that was the nick name for Napoleon's cuirassiers. In these pics I have a recently finished trumpeter for the 7th cuirassiers regiment.
Here's a different view of the trumpeter. This was the first time I used Foundry's three coat paint system. I just used it on the horse, and I think it came out great. It's hard to tell from the pics but it really blends in well together.
One of the hardest thing was the little grenade symbol on the bottom of the saddle blanket. It might not seem that hard to do but you and try to paint little lines with the relative same thickness, also notice the seven painted on the bedroll.
Finally, here's the two of the Perry's Miniatures command stand for the cuirassiers put together. These two figures are the officer and his trumpeter from Perry's 1815 range, the code is FN59 Cuirassier Command. I based them and haven't decided if I'm going to add anything else or not, maybe a little static grass. Once again I hope you enjoyed this little distraction and hope to hear some of your comments in the future.

injured

Currently I'm working on the Reille's 2nd Corp of Napoleon's 1815 Grande Armee. The 72nd regiment of Campi's 2nd brigade is the current infantry regiment I'm trying to finish right now. Here are a couple of shots of a wounded infantryman that I'm going to put into one of my companies for the 72nd regiment.
This particular figure is from the Perry Miniatures line coded FN16 Line Casualties of the 1815 French range.
Here is the group shot of the 1st company of the 72nd regiment. You can tell it's the 1st regiment by the green discs on their shako's. The first line is being shot at with a volley of some sort, while the second line keeps on marching, simply soaking up their comrades deaths by walking over them to their objective.
As you can see I'm still in the W.I.P. stage of the 72nd regiment, this company when done will be the third one done, the others being the 2nd and the 3rd companies, so when it's finally all glued and based I'll have the green, blue and orange disc companies done and I'll give you a group shot so you can see how's it coming. All these figures are from the 1815 Perry Miniatures range, if you're interested the codes are, FN9 Line Infantry March Attack, FN10 Line Infantry Greatcoats March Attack, and finally as stated before the FN16 Line Casualties. I plan on having 36 figures in my battalions, it will be quite big but that's the way I like it. Currently I'm torn between rules that I'm going to use but I'm leaning heavily towards the "General de'Brigade" rule set. Anyway that's all for now, see you soon.

flag bearer

Well here's the final product, I put three different angles for you to look at. I think the GMB flags really make the figure that much better,GMB makes a very detailed and crisp view of the flag.
This is the side angle shot, I tried something different with the horse this time, I put a pink nose on him. I hope it doesn't make the figure look stupid. Also note the number "6" on the side of the bedroll denoting the sixth regiment of lancers.
In this final shot you can see the leopard spots on the helmet cover. I was quite frustrated in trying to make the spots look natural, it took me quite some time experimenting on different other patterns and finally settling on this one. I hope it doesn't look unnatural.
Here is the group shot of the standard bearer with his regiment. I thought I would show you how the figure comes along in the different stages. There is really no ryime or reason in the way I paint, I just select the areas by which area catchs my sight at the time. I hope you enjoy it.
As you can see in the first few shots, the base green of the uniform is brought out by the shade colour, which brings out the highlighted areas by making you think that they are raised higher tham they actually are.
In the final few shots, we see the raised areas highlighted by a very light green colour, it really brings out the raised areas. The hard part is to find the right balance between shading, highlighting and enough of a base colour to make it look just right. Here are some pics of my work station and current work in process's. As you can see I tend to be all over the place wanting to paint every figure I see, I prime my figures white and then black line them myself before I even start to paint, this is a very lengthy process but I find I get the best results this way. I know what your thinking, it would be better to prime in black and go from there, I've tried that and it doesn't seem to work for, to each there own I guess. The majority of my paints are hobby paints made for crafts and not for miniatures, I do have a few Vallejo, Reaper and Game Work Shop paints but being in the region that I am in it's very hard to get these, so I have to order them via mail and that can get very costly, especially with the amount of colour ranges that I have, well over three hundred different shades of colour. This is not to mention the paint-brushes of which you can see, and on the other side I've had to double and triple up just to fit most of my paint-brushes that I use at any given time. I've currently ordered some Foundry paints of which I'm very excited about since they come with three different shades of one colour, of which is the way that I try to paint (Base,Shade,Highlight). As you can also see I received some GMB flags for my standard bearers. I think that GMB makes excellent flags and can't wait to attach them to my units, the final coup-da-gras so to speak. Most of the flags are from Reille's 2nd corp but there's also one from the 7th and 12th cuirassiers. I already cut out the 72nd line regiment flag of Bachelu's division, that's why you only see the 108th line regiment's flag. It looks great and I can't wait to put on my cavalry standards. Anyway bye for now and keep on plugging I know I will.

Hi folks here we go again, today I'm posting miniatures from my three favorite companies. The top picture is one of the three artillery packs available from the Perry Brothers site, the second picture is a cuirassier general from Frontrank Miniatures, and the third picture is a pair of dragoons from their "1815 dragoons charging" pack. All three companies produce some of the best Napoleonic miniatures out there. The Perry's and Foundry are comparable in size and demension, whereas the Frontrank's figure is a little bigger and bulkier. You will be able to see the difference on the table top but with all three companies quality of production I don't think it will matter that much. I will be going into more detail of all three companies in the near future but for now you can visit them through the links I've posted at the bottom. Thanks for reading and looking at my site and bye for now, just remember "Keep The Faith" and keep on painting.

What's up ahead of us? The pictures you see so far are from the "Perry Minatures" collection, which you can get at http://www.perry-miniatures.com/, I only hope I can do the miniatures justice. As far as what I know the perry brothers who own and operate their own web-site produce a 1815 French collection of 25mm miniatures, and as I've said before in my humble opinion are the picasso's of the 25mm Napoleonic miniatures industry. I'm a little biest, but then again who am I but just fan, it's just their attention to detail that I find so appealling, the figures take alot longer to paint if you want to do them justice but that's half the fun. Well enough of shamelessly plugging the "Perry Brothers". Here's a little background info. about me. I live in the Niagara region of Ontario,Canada. Currently I'm employed as a Dual Supervisor at a major casino in the province of Ontario. My hobby started as a little boy watching movies with my mom, who greatly influenced me as I watched whatever she was watching, which turned out to be the old classic genra. Right now I'm 36 years old and the movies back when I was a child tended to be made from historical stories, and from there it was a small step from watching "Waterloo" the movie to playing with toy soldiers, and finally discovering metal miniatures. As to what to expect in the future, right now I'm trying to paint the "72nd regiment" from "General de Brigade Campi's" 2nd brigade of "General de Division's Bachelu's" 5th division from "Reille's" 2nd corp. Like all Napoleonic painter's I tend to bite off more than I can chew, so I'm also working on almost every other aspect of "Napoleon's Grande Army"from his own personal staff all the way down to the lowly infantry grunt. As of right now I'm mainly focusing on "General Reille's" 2nd corp, as I've said before I've started the 72nd, I've also started to paint some of the "5th & 6th Lancers" as well as the "1st & 6th Chasseurs a Cheval" of "Pire's 2nd cavalry division". Bye for now and I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Hi folks, my name is Mark Sing Gen and this is my Blog. I'm quite new to the blogging scene and so you will have to deal with the growing pains, hopefully it won't be that painful. As you can guess from my title, my blog is about my interest or no I should say my obsession with everything Napoleonic. My main interest is in painting 25mm miniatures, I have a collection of painted miniatures mainly 1815 French but like all miniature painters I have dabbled in almost every nation associated with the Napoleonic period. In my personal opinion "Perry Miniatures" produces the best 25mm miniature out there closely followed up by "Foundry" (it's no mistake that both companies miniature's are sculpted by the Perry Twins-of which I am one of there biggest fans!), and bringing up the rear, Front Rank. The rest as far as I'm concerned can't compare in quality, quantity of choice and overall feel, not that I'm putting down the other companies out there, it's just that's there is always the creme of the crop in whatever you endevour to do and these three companies are it, like I said before this is just my personal opinion. One of the first thing I'm going to try and do is figure out how to post some of my pictures on this blog, so I hope you enjoy what you see and read, and just like every French cavalry commander has said before me "CHARGE!".
